Reflecting on a Banner Year for Outdoor Sports in Maine

As a new year dawns over Sebago Lake, local anglers are hopeful for a strong freeze—anticipating the revival of ice fishing after two mild winters.

In 2024, Sebago Lake delivered its best salmon fishing in decades, thanks to reduced lake trout numbers and booming smelt and alewife populations.

Salmon grew larger and healthier, with anglers reporting productive days thanks to abundant baitfish and effective trolling, regardless of lure choice.

Lake trout fishing stayed steady, though salmon catches often stole the spotlight.

Bird hunting required travel north to the Rangeley region, where ruffed grouse offered challenging and rewarding hunts amid autumn beauty.

A third lucky moose permit brought cherished camaraderie to Greenville, though the elusive bull remained out of reach—likely impacted by reduced timber cutting.

Deer season also impressed, with Maine’s harvest expected to reach its second-highest total on record, due in part to expanded antlerless permits.

With winter setting in, local outdoors enthusiasts now eagerly await another season of adventure on Maine’s frozen waters and woodlands.

Major Conservation Initiative Aims to Protect 78,000 Acres in Western Maine

A coalition of conservation groups has launched a landmark effort to protect 78,000 acres in Maine’s Magalloway region, unveiled on March 18, 2025.

Dubbed the Magalloway Collaborative, organizations including the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and The Nature Conservancy aim to raise $62 million by May 2026 to secure this vital landscape.

The project blends sustainable forestry with wildlife habitat preservation, keeping public access open for recreation like hunting, fishing, and hiking.

About 62,500 acres will support active timber harvesting, while 11,200 acres are set aside as wilderness, fostering greater ecological diversity.

These plans echo recent conservation successes in Rangeley, such as new habitat-friendly bridges and public land acquisitions supporting deer populations near Dodge Pond.

By linking more than 500,000 acres of conserved land, the Magalloway project seeks to sustain local economies, outdoor traditions, and the region’s unique natural heritage for generations to come.
